Winter break is here, which means the kiddos are home and eager to have fun! There is much to do, both at home and in the Hampton Roads area. Make this winter break one to remember with some of these ideas for you and your family to try.

Movie marathon

Stock up on the popcorn and hot cocoa, build your pallet of all the comfiest blankets and pillows and settle in to a winter break movie marathon. These days, with access to popular apps like iTunes, Netflix, Hulu or HBO we have a wealth of movies on demand. If you don’t use these apps, the local library has a huge collection of both classic and current favorites. Pick your family’s all-time favorites and work together on creating a lineup that will keep you entertained for the day. You can mix it up switching from genre to genre, or pick a series like Harry Potter or Star Wars and commit to watching them all back-to-back!

Great Wolf Lodge

A regional favorite, this indoor waterpark and resort is sure to be a good time for everyone in the family. Located nearby in Williamsburg, Virginia this is a great choice for Hampton Roads residents to get away for winter break without having to trek too far in the car. They are offering great deals for winter bookings, so act fast if you’re considering this as an option.

Spa day at home

For the girls and the guys, a relaxing spa day can not only be refreshing but entertaining! Include taking turns giving massages, using the hot water in the shower to create a makeshift bathroom sauna‚—don’t waste too much water though, soak your feet in epsom salt bucket and take turns doing each others nails (clear polish for the boys if they insist!).

Visit the local indoor rock climbing gyms

Hampton Roads is lucky to be home to two great rock climbing gyms, Virginia Beach Rock Gym and Latitude Fitness in Norfolk. This is a great family-friendly activity for all ages that is not only fun, but is challenging both mentally and physically. Plus, both locations have great deals when you come as a family, lowering the actual cost per person.

Make a scrapbook

So much of our photos are online these days! It can be nice to print out your family’s photos for a change and create a scrapbook or photo album together. Local craft stores have a ton of great supplies for embellishing each page, or you can make your own with construction paper. Plus, this is a craft that you can always add to over time!

Go for a hike

Hampton Roads has many parks and trails to explore all year round. First Landing State Park, Great Dismal Swamp, Back Bay are just naming a few. Bundle up the family, load your pack with snacks and water and hit the trails for an awesome experience together. You may be surprised at all you see in the great outdoors during winter.

Bake off

Family baking is a classic winter activity, but you can add a special twist by making it a challenge between family members. Partner up and pick your favorite baked good for each team to take turns sharing for dessert. Once everyone has had their turn to share their work, vote on which was your favorite. A great way to explore culinary creativity and nurture your sweet tooth!
