Oftentimes we think of summer as a great time to getaway and splurge for a vacation away from home. Unfortunately, time away from home, work or finances doesn’t always allow us to “get away.” Instead, we can have all the fun, excitement and relaxation of a vacation right here in Hampton Roads via a staycation! Here are some of our tips for planning a summertime staycation in Hampton Roads.
Visit local museums
Hampton Roads is home to so many museums to explore! Museums range from showcasing the area’s history, military, science, the arts and more. When planning your staycation, we recommend making a list of the top 5-10 museums you’d like to visit and then create a map so you can systematically tour them all. Here’s a helpful guide of Hampton Roads museums to get you started.
Visit Top Golf
Topgolf is a high-tech driving range that is relatively new to Hampton Roads, located in Virginia Beach right off of 264 expressway. Topgolf is fun for all ages with close and far-range targets for all levels of golfers—even brand new beginners! You can kick back and relax while you are taking turns hitting the golf balls, or order food and drinks straight to your area.
Take a bike ride or hike through First Landing State Park
First Landing State Park is located in Virginia Beach off of Shore Drive, and is a great place to log some hours during your staycation! The park has miles of hiking and biking trails (pet and kid friendly), including the Cape Henry trail that spans 6 miles, connecting the Chesapeake Bay to the oceanfront at Atlantic Avenue and 64th Street. The trails in the park are nice and shady, so you won’t have to worry about getting too hot. But, if you do there are plenty of places along the way like the Narrows to take a dip into Broad Bay. What’s more? First Landing State Park has a beachfront campground—a perfect way to spend a night or two of your staycation.
Host a potluck barbecue
Who says staycation has to be spent alone? Invite the neighbors or friends over for a night of food and fun. A potluck is always a great choice as it helps lower your prep and cleanup time and you’re guaranteed that there’s something that everyone likes! Set up some outdoor lawn games and maybe even have a bonfire and smores to celebrate your staycation together.
Go to a Norfolk Tides game
The Norfolk Tides season begins just in time for your summertime staycation. Tickets are pretty affordable and there is tons of fun to be had whether you go alone or with friends and family. Check out their schedule here.
