The debate about what type of material to use on the exterior of a new construction home is not a new debate. Everyone has their opinions on vinyl, brick, and engineered products. If you aren’t familiar with LP Smartside products, they hit the market in 1994 and have become incredibly popular with installations in over 4 million homes since their debut in the marketplace.
Hearndon Construction uses LP Smartside products on the exteriors of their homes. Durability is an advantage that the company consistently promotes through advertising. One example exists in Hilo, Hawaii, a jungle climate with high humidity and approximately 170 inches of rain per year. Even in this climate that can be structurally challenging to building products, this product resists fungal decay and remains structurally sound!

LP Smartside products come with a 5/50 year limited warranty. For the first 5 years, there is a 100% replacement feature. The remainder of the warranty period is covered by proration. Another amazing feature is that the warranty is transferrable to the next homeowner.
In terms of installation, LP SmartSide is easier to install than most fiber cement products because it is much lighter in weight and does not require a special tool to cut it. Anoother advantage is that the SmartSide products come in 16’ lengths where most of the fiber cement products come in 12’ lengths. According to LP Smartside’s website, their siding products are “more resistant than fiber cement products to impact damage from common projectiles such as golf balls, baseballs, and rocks.” Independent testing form NASA has, in fact, confirmed these findings. Furthermore, “under similar conditions, with all three projectiles more damage was sustained by the fiber cement siding product than the engineered wood siding product.”
