Suffolk, Virginia’s motto is “It’s a Good Time to Be in Suffolk” and we agree. Suffolk is a charming, southern city with access to many modern amenities and lots of reasons to stick around and stay awhile. It is consistently named among the top small towns in America to live as well as one of the best towns in the US to start and grow a business. There are many reasons why Suffolk enjoys these accolades, but here are just five reasons we think Suffolk is a great place to settle down.
At its heart, Suffolk is a small town. Despite covering over 400 square miles (which makes it a larger city than Dallas or Indianapolis), it is full of quaint communities, an iconic downtown Main Street and people who have lived here their whole lives. Suffolk offers the neighborly feel of yesteryear with the amenities of today. With booming businesses, state of the art hospitals and medical facilities, ample shopping and award-winning restaurants, Suffolk offers the best of both worlds.
At the heart of any town is its market, and the Suffolk Farmers’ Market is no exception. Thanks to the thousands of acres of farmland and miles of river shoreline in the city, the market is ripe with local produce, meats, seafood and more. Because of Suffolk’s ideal southern location, the market is able to operate every Saturday from late April through late November. But the market doesn’t stop at tomatoes and cucumbers. This market offers Suffolk residents weekly events including craft workshops, book signings, petting zoos and more.
The cost of living in Suffolk is considerably lower than other cities in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. “More bang for your buck” is the common saying as the price per square foot and lot size offer a lot of value within the city limits. Whether you’re looking for farmland or new construction, Suffolk has it all. New communities, such as Foxfield Meadows, offer new construction homes at affordable prices with easy access to all the amenities Suffolk has to offer. And with an average commute time of less than 30 minutes, no matter where you work, Suffolk is a convenient and affordable place to live.
Suffolk boasts some beautiful outdoor activities – whether you enjoy golfing, hiking, boating or even sky diving, Suffolk has it. World renowned golf courses skirt the James River and the Great Dismal Swamp to the south is a kayaker’s paradise. Skydive Suffolk is the premier skydiving center in Coastal Virginia with 28 acres of landing area amongst the 500 acre Suffolk Executive Airport. Whether it’s tee time or dive time, you’ll find your outdoor outlet in Suffolk.
The city’s calendar of events is always full and larger annual events such as the Suffolk Peanut Festival and the Suffolk Wine Festival draw crowds from all over the region. The Lava Music Festival takes over the Suffolk Executive Airport to host big name bands and singers while the Taste of Suffolk event lets participants sample dishes from several chefs making a serious culinary statement about this southern city. In fact, Suffolk is full of fine dining options including Vintage Tavern, Riverstone Chophouse and Harper’s Table, whose executive chef will be cooking at the James Beard House later this month.
There are so many more reasons to consider Suffolk for your next hometown, but we think these five are some of the most compelling reasons for why “it’s a good time to be in Suffolk.”
